Faces of Eve – A Tribute to the Power of Women in Community
Featuring the Art Photography of Niurka Barroso
by Lu French with Neli Santamarina and The Faces of Eve Collaborative

The Faces of Eve is a hymn in praise of women – where and why they choose to call a particular place on earth home and how they choose to live in that space. In this pivotal time in women’s history, it is fitting to celebrate the glorious, powerful image of Woman as the hope of our future, focusing the lens on how each person who identifies as Woman sees herself and how she wishes to be seen, regardless of how society has insisted on labeling her throughout history.  ~ Niurka Barroso

One does not have to imagine what happens when women come together en masse during a pivotal moment in time.

The world saw it firsthand during the Women’s March and #METOO movements that began in 2017. What happened was nothing short of seismic and game-changing, catapulting the first black woman, Kamala Harris, to the office of Vice President of the United States in 2021.

As these movements gathered momentum, documentary and art photographer Niurka Barroso was inspired to capture the essence of this historic moment in one monumental socially conscious photographic mural. Barroso’s The Faces of Eve – A Photographic Tribute to the Power of Women was unveiled in December 2018 as the featured installation of the Women by Women Art Exhibition at Raw Space in Vero Beach, Florida, alongside works of social commentary by international and local women artists.

In visually rich detail, this book tells a compelling story about women supporting women

The striking images and stories in this 152 page art book have timely social messages for every woman and for every person who values the women in their lives. It begins with the conception of the mural and continues with the formation of the Faces of Eve Collaborative. Throughout, you’ll find powerful images, narratives, quotes and women’s essays on gender, race and diversity. The book culminates with our work during the COVID pandemic of 2020-21, as we rallied around the brilliant idea of Jonnie Mae Perry: to build a new cultural center that expands on the existing Gifford Historic Museum and Cultural Center honoring African American heritage and provides much needed  resources for the underserved community of Gifford, Florida.

Net proceeds of this book will benefit the Gifford Cultural Center Project

Specifically, our fundraising campaign is designed to raise the initial $80,000 required to engage expertise for master project planning. This phase is vital to preparing for the structural/facilities design and build phase.
